The Violet-Backed Starling belongs to the family Sturnidae (Starlings). This bird species has an average size of 16 centimeters. Because of this, the Amethyst Starling is known as the smallest Starling among South African Starlings.

Habitat

The Violet-Backed Starling is found in central and South Africa. This bird species lives in areas with dry and tropical climates. In its natural range, the Amethyst Starling inhabits savannas, scrublands, forests, inland wetlands and man-made areas.

Appearance

A female and a male differ greatly in appearance. This is also called sexual dimorphism. The malehas iridescent and shiny purple plumage. This contrasts brilliantly with the bright white breast and belly. The female does not have iridescent and glossy coloration. The female has a sallow brown plumage with brown streaks.

Diet

The Violet-Backed Starling is an omnivore. This means that this bird species eats both animal and plant material.

Its diet consists of fruits and Insects, such as Termites and winged Ants.

Natural behavior

The Violet-Backed Starling forages during the day. This bird species searches for food in a group or in pairs. Moreover, this bird species may also forage with other species, such as the Greater Blue-Eared Starling, the Wattled Starling and other insectivorous bird species.
