Conservation project England

Mondo Verde’s World Garden England is located within a protected nature reserve in the municipality of Landgraaf. When this world garden was constructed, a transition was created from forest area to gardens with hedges, flower beds, and ponds. Old trees have been preserved, as has the stream that runs through the area. A pond has been created in front of the cottage, which is home to many small fish. The pond is surrounded by large quantities of flowers and aquatic plants, creating a rich variety of flowers around the pond where butterflies, bees, and other insects live. This flora and fauna enable the area to serve as a laboratory. This makes it possible to study the settlement, reproduction, and distribution of butterflies, bees, and birds and to determine which elements have a beneficial effect on biodiversity.

Thanks to the hedges and shrubs that have been planted, many birds can easily find insects and seeds and have settled permanently in the garden. By leaving old oak and beech trees intact, Tawny owls have formed their nesting holes here. Kingfishers fish in the ponds and breed on the banks of the stream. Further on, a fox has found its habitat and hedgehogs hibernate every year under the branches and leaves that have been left lying on parts of this garden. This has created a dialogue between landscaped gardens and a protected area.

The English garden in Mondo Verde is therefore becoming a Field Lab for native species. This lab should serve as a base for native species so that they can settle, reproduce, and spread further. In addition, this Field Lab also plays an important role for park visitors. With this research, Mondo Verde wants this English garden to become a source of inspiration for the public. Visitors can learn how to give native species a place in their own gardens or living environments by using the right plant species and important elements such as insect hotels and nesting boxes.
